Dreaming of Spring

Let's face it... I'm not very good at keeping a blog. On this last day of January (yes!!) I realized that I had not yet posted anything this year. Alas. Since there are still many cold, dreary months ahead (drat!!) maybe I will be a bit more conscientious about it.

Some observations from a Dutch winter:
- Dutch people are happy when they can go ice skating. No, that's an understatement. Dutch people are elated when they can go ice skating. To the extent that Ministries close the office so people can go home and skate on their local ponds. It's really quite a phenomenon - suddenly, all of the water in the country is turned into a giant playground, with skaters on literally every body of water in sight - from the tiny pond in the mid-city park to the big lake out at the edge of town.

- In a month, it will be light out when I get up. That's not to say that the sun will rise before me, but at the very least, twilight will have broken by the time I get to the tea kettle. This is such a drastic improvement from the last two months that it is worthy of celebration. (I shouldn't tease you by telling you that in June, the sun is up from 5:15am until 10pm...)

- Everyone is desperate for spring. You can tell, because all over the office, pots of bulbs just beginning to break into flower are appearing. Never mind that it will be three months before they do this outdoors... we can pretend it's spring by bringing a little brightness inside with us.

Okay, that's all for now... I'll post again with pictures from our excellent trip to Maastricht!
